Williston
Williston is the largest city in Levy County and a center for business, events, and local attractions. It’s home to several major manufacturers, including A&N Corporation and the world headquarters of Monterey Boats. The city was founded in the mid-1800s by Jesse Mercer Willis. Born in Georgia in 1822, Willis was orphaned at a young age and moved to Florida when he was ten. He settled in Levy County in 1853, where he homesteaded, raised a family, and became a respected leader. He served as a farmer, merchant, teacher, church deacon, tax collector, and postmaster. The town was incorporated in 1875, just a few years before his passing in 1881. Williston offers a variety of activities for visitors. Two Tails Ranch is home to rescued elephants, while Devils Den and Blue Grotto are popular diving spots known for their clear, spring-fed waters. Kirby Family Farm features a restored steam locomotive that runs on its own private track and hosts family-friendly events. The city is also home to the Regional General Hospital, the Ivy House Restaurant, and the annual Peanut Festival, which celebrates one of the area’s most important crops. The former Montbrook Army Airfield now serves as the city’s municipal airport and houses an industrial park supporting local industry and commerce.
